O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. Judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly from jury. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was on the third row, and then in the bottom two. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. After giving consistently stellar performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil beat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol right away.
